What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment is different than inpatient hospitalization for psychiatric or substance use emergencies. Hospitalization programs prioritize medical monitoring for safety and stability in an environment that’s often impersonal, institutional, and restrictive. They’re short-term programs that help people in crisis reach a physical, psychological, and emotional state that allows them to return to daily life, or – in many cases – step down to a less immersive level of care, like residential treatment.

Residential treatment picks up where inpatient hospitalization ends – but inpatient hospitalization is not a prerequisite for residential treatment.

If you have symptoms related to a substance use or mental health disorder that are so disruptive they prevent you from participating in or meeting the basic responsibilities of family, work, and school life, then – after a thorough assessment and accurate diagnosis – a licensed and qualified mental health or treatment professional may refer you to residential treatment.

During residential treatment, we offer:

  • A full biopsychosocial assessment
  • Comprehensive medical evaluation
  • Medication review and management
  • Screening and treatment for co-occurring disorders and history of trauma
  • Personalized case management
  • A safe, healthy environment with comfortable living accommodations
  • Time to think, reflect, and recover
  • Three healthy and nutritious meals a day

At kathy ireland® Recovery Centers residential treatment facilities, we create a home-like environment that’s nothing like the cold, sterile feel of a hospital. Your comfort is our priority. Your healing is our goal. We encourage healthy socialization and positive interaction with your treatment peers. The goal of residential care is to teach you practical skills to help you regulate your emotions, cope with the symptoms or your substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorder, and prepare you for everyday life after you complete your treatment program. Your treatment team and recovery peers are by your side the whole time, working toward the same objective: your overall health and wellness.

What Happens During Residential Treatment?

During residential treatment, you live at the inpatient treatment facility full-time with a group of recovery peers and a full-time medical staff. You spend your days in immersive treatment and therapy under the watchful eyes of our skilled and experienced clinicians. Evenings include workshops, peer support meetings, recovery homework, and time to journal, relax, and reflect on the progress you make during the day.

Your treatment plan will include a combination of the following therapeutic approaches:

  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Family therapy

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT):

  • For patients in detox from:
    • Alcohol
    • Opioids

Case Management and Aftercare Services

There’s a fact about SUD treatment that informs our approach. Every patient at kathy ireland® Recovery Centers learns it quickly: treatment is short, but recovery is long. In other words, the time you spend in an official treatment program is the start of a journey that lasts a lifetime. It’s not the end of a series of events that land you in rehab. It’s the beginning of a process that restores balance and sets you on course to live a life of your choosing, rather than a life dictated by the symptoms of a substance use or co-occurring mental health disorder.

That’s why case management and aftercare are essential elements of treatment at kathy ireland® Recovery Centers. You’re not alone during treatment, and you won’t be alone when you complete your treatment program.

Your case manager will be by your side to advocate on your behalf the entire time. They use information we from your intake and assessment process to guide treatment planning, monitor treatment progress, and plan appropriate support services. Your case manager will learn about your:

  • Treatment preferences
  • Short-term and long-term recovery goals
  • Cultural or religious requirements
  • Motivations for recovery

They use that information to tailor your treatment program while you’re with us, but more importantly, they’ll use that information for what comes next: your ongoing sobriety and aftercare plan.

The quality of your aftercare plan plays a significant role in determining your risk of relapse. A case manager will provide referrals to the private and community-based resources you need for successful, long-term recovery. The more resources and support you have upon discharge, the easier it will be to stay on track with your continued recovery.

Case managers collaborate with you to tailor your aftercare plan to meet your individual needs. If you step-down from residential treatment to a less immersive level of care, your case manager may arrange a referral for:

  • Sober living facilities
  • Partial hospitalization treatment, called PHP
  • Intensive outpatient treatment, called IOP
  • Outpatient treatment, called OP
  • Telehealth: OP programs may happen virtually or via a safe and secure video platform

If you finish any treatment program at any level of care and are ready to live independently, your case manager may provide referrals for the following:

  • Job training and placement services
  • Services to address housing instability
  • Services to address food instability
  • Individual or group psychotherapy
  • 12-Step or self-help meetings
  • Doctor’s offices or community health centers

We know that when you complete a treatment program and take your first steps toward independence, you may feel like you’re walking a tightrope without a net. The goal of case management and aftercare is to provide a net. The purpose of the net is not so much to catch you if you fall – although it will do that – but to give you the confidence you need to put one foot in front of the other, one day at a time. We want you to you feel safe and secure with every step you take. As time passes, your confidence grows, and you realize you’re no longer on a tightrope: you’re on solid ground you created through your hard work, commitment, and belief in a better future.
